Testimonial #1 on the  Full Marathon Training Program:

Race report: Over the past two years, I found a love for running, but not racing. Last fall, I baaaarely eeked out a 10K at You Go Girl. I struggled throughout, felt miserable, walked some, and couldn’t imagine even thinking about a half. With some dedicated tempo work and lots of pounding the pavement, I shaved 12 minutes off my 10K time by Santa Runs (and dropped 35 lbs in the process). I felt ready for the next step, but also a little lost: my former training partner had quit running and my casual Sunday running group had petered out. I was a runner with a goal but no support. Enter this group. I truly can’t imagine a more knowledgeable, approachable, expert staff and coaching team. I always bring lots of questions (and follow-up questions, and follow-ups to those…), and you fielded them all with a smile. I tend to space on things like staying hydrated and fueled and investing in my own gear, and your reminders kept me on top of all the little details that made such a big difference. I listened to every word you all had to say. It was all valuable. Thank you all so much.

Race report: I’m trying to think of something besides the LEGO movie theme, “Everything is Awesome.” But I can’t. So, everything was awesome. I ran happy. I floated. At my last few races, I started off too fast and burned out, so I held back. I remembered Sabrina saying that the difference between a good race and a bad one could be 10-15 seconds per mile, so I was careful to resist my “run like a bat out of hell” instinct for the first mile. I found my pal Shannon right before the bridge, and we fell into a comfortable pace. I was steady in between the 2:05 pacer and 2:10 pacer, but I made a totally unnecessary bathroom stop that cost me 90 seconds at mile 11 and the 2:10 pacer passed me. I decided to pick up the pace to at least catch up, and it felt good, so I picked it up a little more. Floating. Picked it up some more. Passed the pacer. Holy cow, passed every person I ever knew (not really, but that’s what it felt like). Ran harder than I thought I could, and then I was done! Sabrina predicted 2:11 for me, and I finished at 2:07:50. Afterward, I felt like I had meditated for 2 hours. I'm still flying high. I just can't believe it.

What worked: At the last minute I decided to ditch my iPod in order to listen to Map My Run with my pace and mileage in my ear every mile, and that worked well. Ate more than I thought I needed to eat beforehand (protein pancake, cashew butter, banana, coffee, plus bagel and peanut butter at the start). During the race, I had a Gu every 4 miles like clockwork. Sipped water every mile.

Learning for next time: Need a larger water bottle! I stopped way too much. DON’T STOP TO PEE UNLESS IT’S AN EMERGENCY. For reals.

Funnies: I’m still chuckling at a few things: The guy blasting “Eye of the Tiger” from a boombox. The ½ way house. The “Worst Parade Ever” sign. I loved the energy of the marathoners and couldn’t have imagined better spectators. Drew energy from every one.

Sniffles: My mom is battling cancer. Seeing her on the sidelines cheering for me something I will never forget. My three kiddos (8, 5, and 1) got to watch as well. At the end of each day, we always ask the kids about their favorite part. Last night my girls said that seeing me run was the best part of their weekend. And my 8yo asked to take my medal to school today for show-and-tell. Don’t worry, the medal is back home safe.

What else can I say? EVERYTHING WAS AWESOME. Thank you all so much! I’ll be back for sure.

Testimonial #2 on the Half-Marathon Training Program:

Okay!! Here is my marathon story!

Picture it (2013 and i was a heavy drinker and smoker).

December 2013 came around and I had the worst news from the doctors. They told me that i weighed 214 pounds and that my liver functions were through the charts. I did not want to be a statistic and i didn't want to leave my partner alone and sad. So I bought the worst shoes known to man and ran and ran and ran (oh by the way i ran like 3 miles).

I googled running site and found some generic running program to take me into the 2014 1/2 St. Paddy Day Run. The day arrived and I had trained for this (no smoking and i only drank on the weekends). I showed up to the event and everyone was dressed in running gear. I was in a full sweat suit, complete with running gloves and hat (damb folks, it was March). I ran that 1/2 marathon in 1:52 sec. I was over joyed and i knew that i was meant for more. Days later.......

I scoured the Facebook wold for running info....I clicked on some Facebook page and somehow Sabrina private messaged me. She told me that she would meet me at Starbucks and help me. I was so nervous!! I met with her and she was in top to shape and me, 190 lbs and still trying to wrap my head around running. She wrote this amazing running guide that looked like the holy grail.

I followed that guild word for word.....i may have messaged Sabrina daily!

I signed up for the 2014 NEED FOR SPEED, and believe it or not my running peeps, I was the last to get up those hills. I ran my little heart out but everyone had finished before me.

Fast forward to fall 2014 (Portland Marathon) I ran my first marathon and thought I was going to die, more than once. At mile 22 I was dead -- running people tried talking to me -- I was like (I am dying -- please move forward). I finished my first marathon in 4:15 sec. and was found wandering around in the crowd by my partner (I honestly don't remember that, he tells me it is true).

With a marathon under my belt, i was semi-hooked.

January 2015 ----- I signed up to join Fleet Feet and make this the year of Adam. Well I was only half right. I ran and ran and ran, I had lost 60 lbs, quick smoking and drinking and had made great friends. I had the shoes, the gear, the motivation and the as you all know I broke me toes, then healed, broke me ribs and am healing.

I suppose I write this because I want you all to know that running is more than a marathon, a medal. It is about changing oneself. It is about community and support. You ALL have given me so much love and I will never be able to repay that -- but what I know to be true is that YOU ALL are such a great motivator for me and I am blessed to know each and everyone of you! Running is more than medals and awards, it is about the connections we make, the obstacles me overcome, the time we spend away from our loved ones!! I hope that we can continue this journey and I hope that I will see you Friday for the post party!!!!

Testimonial #3 on No Boundaries 5k:

Who would have thought that I would enjoy this running thing?  Yes, I’m the one that says there’s no one chasing me so why? ….and don’t I have enough to do  already?  Sound familiar?

Well, at this year’s Summer Social for my Cross District business group I eavesdropped.  I listened in on a conversation about     Fleet Feet.  It sounded interesting, what is it? That’s how I met Janna ~ a total energy package and my journey began.  I have been very lax in a healthy routine so this may be what gets me off the couch. It’s funny how opportunities catch you when least expected…..

Coach Janna invited me to find out more about Fleet Feet and their No Boundaries Program.  I attended that first orientation meeting with about 20 to 30 others.  Looking around to take in the group make-up; we covered the entire spectrum of fitness. I felt comfortable yet still unsure of what was to come.  Fleet Feet representative and coach from their Bonney Lake store and Coach Janna with the new Tacoma store explained the benefits of learning to run properly, safely and injury free. They introduced all of the mentor coaches and Dr. George of Proctor Chiropractor.  They told of previous groups they had coached to accomplish their 5k goals with this 10 week program.  Their sincerity encouraged me, I knew then this is a challenge I wanted to be a part of.  The first group picture happened that night and my new family began to bond!

Twice a week, throughout the program, we met to hear from experts who taught us to breathe effectively, warm-up properly, how to build a strong core, good nutrition ~ a total awesome package!

Week one our challenge began with a 1.5 minute run and 2 minute walk 4 times. Sounded easy, but in about one minute my nose began to run more than my feet and it was tough to catch my breath. The walk part was hardly enough to let me recover; it was a real challenge for me.  I looked forward to each training day though, twice a week, because we all got just a little bit better each time. The four cross training days helped mix it up to keep everything in balance.  Building my stamina and leg strength also is helping me with my original goal of getting back on my bicycle after way too many years.

Here we are at Week Ten (OMG!) and tomorrow is my first 5k. I cannot thank the Fleet Feet Team enough for this journey.  Coach Janna, Stephanie, Sabrina, Kelly and Rob ~* No Boundaries has helped me discover many things about myself that I had never thought possible. I am strong and determined when I put my mind to it; it’s never too late in life to set new goals, accomplish new things and most importantly joining the team is the “best thing” I have done for myself in a very long time. Running does change everything!
